  • ‘The end of the world’: Europe’s most south-western point

I started my day with one of those sleep ins where you have absolutely nothing to get up for so I woke up feeling 110% refreshed. I ate my first bowl of muesli, yogurt and fruit in over a month and my first breakfast outdoors since I left home and it was absolutely blissful. So i ate breakfast and drank tea in the sunshine overlooking the town. I don’t have to wear shoes here, the oranges are dirt cheap, home-grown and delicious and there are only 6 people in total staying in this house so i have an entire dorm room to myself. The owner was going to a wedding so he couldn’t drive us into the beach so we were going to have to get the bus. I decided rather than to wait for an hour and half for the next bus and since I had all the time in the world, i’d walk to the beach. Hugo told me it’d take an hour, google maps said 2 hours and 11 minutes. Not knowing that i’d be walking the entire way down the bicycle path on the side of the high way I set off for Sagres. 28 songs, 11kms, 1 creepy guy asking if i “wanted a ride” and just over 2 hours later (walking in thongs might I add!!) I reached Tonel beach in Sagres; a popular surfing spot for tourists and locals and the first surf-able waves I’ve seen in Portugal (by my dad’s standards). Probably not the smartest idea i’ve had, but I felt so accomplished that I actually stuck it out the entire way and didn’t wimp out at the bus stops along the way. I swam and sunbaked for 3 hours, and ate my packed lunch at the look out and caught the bus home. Tonight I got given free prawns and lemon from a lady that was leaving so I had a feast for dinner and i’m going to spend the rest of the night reading on the hammocks on the balcony. This is more than what i needed!

This is a video my friend Paddy made of his trip to Africa. I met Paddy in Lagos, he’s from Wollongong. He and his two friends were part of the “Fry Pan Gang”; they were wild, could drink anyone under the table but the most hilarious and down to earth guys I’ve met. My computers memory is poor, but this film has encouraged me to splurge on some large memory cards and film lots more and save them all for a rainy day/ when I return and create a euro-tripping video! AND South Africa looks SICK!

    Raposeria, Sagres.

This morning I said goodbye to the hostel and boy was it hard. Mama told me “you’re a good girl, you come back to Lagos and visit” and come back to Lagos I will. I’ve have met some of the most friendly, wild and wonderful people at this hostel, it was hard to find anyone that you couldn’t get along with. A lot of unforgettable people and unforgettable moments but after 13 days of party, party, party and basking in the sun I am well and truly ready for a rest. So i’ve moved into a very small isolated surf hostel in Sagres (the most south western point of Europe) 5km from the main beach. Another home-style hostel, surrounded by traditional white Portuguese houses with terracotta roofs and not much more than this, for 3 and a half days of down time and recharging before I hit the extravegant Spanish fiestas and culture.

    HAPPY BIRTHDAY MIKA!

This is Mika. He’s the Rising Cock events co-ordinator. At the age of 24 he collapsed at a work seminar only to find out that this was a result of a brain cancer that was spreading rapidly. He had a 67% chance of going blind from the operation and a very good chance of not surviving. One night when i was working night shift we he told me absolutely everything about what he has gone through and I was literally brought to tears and my whole perspective of everything has completely changed! But a month ago he was given the all clear and yesterday marked his 26th birthday and the first one that he has been not in hospital and able to celebrate! He’s also one of the most genuine, friendliest and lovely guys i’ve met at “The cock” and has over the last 13 days become a very good friend. Last night it was also a lot of people that i started out here with myself last night, as well as my last party night so we tattooed everyone with “Mika” stamps and I took 300 photos whilst trying to party and dance. In short last night was next level wild and i’m over the most that i was here long enough to celebrate this wonderful humans special day!

    Rising Cock represent!

Since i have been staying at this hostel for almost two weeks now and last night was my final night to party, I bought a rising cock shirt to wear out, got ‘tattooed’ up and went out in rising cock style.

    A Portugese banquette

Tonight was two of my closest friends here last night so we decided to ‘splurge’ on a traditional Portuguese meal. We went to a local favourite but stupidly didn’t take the advice of others to order just one dish between all of us (wanting to sample as much as we could). Not only did we have the ginormous pot of portuguese style meat and seafood stir fried with garlic, onion, peppers and a delicious sauce with rice and potatoes served on the side as per usual, but we also had an equivalent size of portages style pork and potatoes and garlic calamari to get through on tpo of a starter of fresh olives and bread. This was the attempts of 3 girls and a guys at our main dish. and we probably took home more food than we consumed. I definitely consumed more meat in one sitting that i have my entire trip away, but portuguese food is so fresh, succulent, coated with lemon (right up my alley) and delicious! All of this for less than 15 euro each and we’ve got food to last us the rest of the week!

Since leaving Australia to travel I have realised:

    • I probably should actually travel around Australia
    • We actually have alot of beautiful things right at our door step
    • I take our weather, beaches and waves for granted
    • Newcastle is aaaalllriiighht!

I have caught an incredibly ‘bad’ case of the travel bug. --- 1 week ago --- 4 notes ---

Today was the infamous Rising Cock Booze Cruise. I worked till 8am this morning and work again tonight but got to go on the boat for free and drink as much as I could so it was an offer too good to turn down. Alcohol, food and cave tours. Needless to say, today was wild!

These boys are next level crazy. Usually they’ll drink a bottle of vodka to themselves as a pre-drinks, today they put sunscreen in their drinks and drank it! But, they are the best humans!
